about

...for double bass & prerecorded electronics by Daniel Barbiero

...for double bass & prerecorded electronics is the second release by double bassist-composer Daniel Barbiero for Endtitles. It follows and in some respects is a companion piece to 2020’s In/Completion, an acclaimed collection of graphic and other open-form scores by contemporary composers, realized for solo double bass.

Like In/Completion, ...for double bass & prerecorded electronics was inspired by classic music of the postwar European and American avant-gardes. Whereas In/Completion was inspired by experiments with innovative, indeterminate notation, ...for double bass & prerecorded electronics was inspired by the classic tape-and-orchestral-instrument compositions of the 1960s and 1970s.

The individual pieces on ...for double bass & prerecorded electronics were conceived of as bi-layered performances in which previously recorded pieces of electronic music would serve as the foundations for subsequently composed or improvised responses on acoustic double bass and prepared acoustic double bass. Although the electronic foundations are fixed the double bass responses are not, and when performed live the pieces may vary considerably from performance to performance, although the harmonic and/or rhythmic constraints inherent in the electronic parts will make for a certain baseline consistency across performances.

The electronic tracks were composed and realized by Ken Moore on the Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer. The electronic tracks that formed the basis for 4a, 4b, 4c and 6 originally appeared on Ken’s Electronic Mutations album, while the remainder were commissioned for this project and composed and recorded in February, 2021 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio USA. The double bass and prepared double bass parts were recorded in February, 2021 in Silver Spring, Maryland USA. The final tracks were assembled by Barbiero in Silver Spring in March of 2021. No electronic modification or processing was used on the acoustic instrument.

Bio information:
Daniel Barbiero (1958, New Haven CT USA) is a double bassist, composer and writer in the Washington DC area. His music is based on the complex interrelationship between pitch and timbre in the context of free improvisation and the interpretation of indeterminate compositions. As a composer, he creates verbal, graphic and other scores using non-standard notation for soloists and small ensembles; as an instrumentalist, he has performed at venues throughout the Washington-Baltimore area. He writes on the art, music and literature of the classic avant-gardes of the 20th century as well as on contemporary works for various online journals, and is the author of As Within, So Without, a collection of essays published in October, 2020 by Arteidolia Press. ...for double bass & prerecorded electronics is his second release for the Endtitles label.
